Q: I am 63 and my BP was 192. I never took Amlovasc prescribed by my doctor for the last 4 weeks. I took Hawthorn compound with garlic and changed my diet to decrease sodium, and after 2 weeks my BP is 150,139/87. My doctor said to start taking the tablets again, but I do not want to as I am afraid of side effects and that I will have to take them for the rest of my life. How Zestoretic Reduces Blood Pressure Zestoretic is a combination of Lisinopril and Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). Lisinopril is an Angiotestin Converting Enzyme Inhibitor or more commonly known as ACE Inhibitors. Angiotensin II is a chemical that causes the muscles surrounding the blood vessels to contract (tighten). This in turn narrows the blood vessels. This narrowing increases the pressure within the blood vessels and can cause high blood pressure (hypertension). Lisinopril slows (inhibits) the activity of the enzyme, which decreases the production of angiotensin II. As a result, the blood vessels enlarge or dilate, and the blood pressure is reduced.
