How Hyzaar Reduces Blood Pressure Hyzaar is an antihypertensive combination drug containing hydrochlorothiazide and losartan. Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) decreases the amount of fluid in your body by increasing the amount of salt and water you lose in your urine. Losartan is one of a new class of blood pressure medication called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs).
