Q: Do BP meds (i.e. Altace, Toprol) become ineffective after awhile because your body just gets used to them? A: Hypertension is a progressive disease so over time it may take more medication to keep it in control. Regular exercise and maintaining a normal body weight really help with progression of the disease.

How Hyzaar Reduces Blood Pressure Hyzaar is an antihypertensive combination drug containing hydrochlorothiazide and losartan. Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) decreases the amount of fluid in your body by increasing the amount of salt and water you lose in your urine. Losartan is one of a new class of blood pressure medication called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). Angiotensin II is a chemical that causes the muscles surrounding the blood vessels to contract (tighten). This in turn narrows the blood vessels.
