Q: My blood pressure pill, Diovan, causes me to cough a lot. Is this normal between high BP and meds? A: A well known side effect of angiotension inhibitors is coughing. Although coughing occurs less frequently with Diovan than other medications of this class, coughing should not be considered normal. You are having a side effect from a medication and should discuss it with your doctor. Your doctor needs to be aware that you are having a problem so that together a decision can be made about your blood pressure treatment.

How Cozaar Reduces Blood Pressure Cozaar (losartan) is one of a new class of blood pressure medication called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). Angiotensin II is a chemical that causes the muscles surrounding the blood vessels to contract (tighten). This in turn narrows the blood vessels. This narrowing increases the pressure within the blood vessels and can cause high blood pressure (hypertension). Cozaar works by blocking the action of angiotensin II. As a result, the blood vessels dilate (relax) and blood pressure is reduced. Other ARB medications include Diovan, Avapro, Atacand, Micardis, Atacand Plus, and Hyzaar.
